Unit 2 Quiz

This week you will have a quiz on Ratios and Rates.  The quiz will consist of 8 questions similar to those that you have seen in your homework packet and during class.

You will need to be able to:
ü Identify equivalent ratios
ü Complete ratio tables
ü Use proportions to problem solve
ü Go from a part to part ratio to a part to whole ratio
ü Calculate unit rate/unit price

ü Determine the better buy
Use the Distributive Property to create two equivalent expressions AND explain the terms in the expression (YES, a throwback to Unit 1!)

There are a couple of links below for Khan Academy videos.

I   If you need help with any of these topics you can come during lunch for extra help on Tuesday (that is 4th period for classes 622 and 623).  If you are in class 624 see me during homeroom.

You also have access to TenMarks assignments which I will be updating today as well.  These assignments are optional extra practice.

Below are a few links to Screencasts (videos of myself problem solving where you can't see me you can only see my work).  The sound was not working on my computer so as soon as I fix that the videos will have sound to go along with the work I am doing.

Oh, by the way, my first pet's name was Jordan (after Michael Jordan).  This information will come in handy this week, so don't forget it!  And don't tell anyone else!

Unit 2

As Unit 1 comes to an end and we are completing test corrections and Unit 1 Goals packets, it is important to continue working on the skills we need to practice.  We will be starting Unit 2 the end of the week.

Unit 2 is Ratios and Proportional Relationships.  You have some background on ratios from 5th grade.  I have included some useful links below to familiarize you with the topics we will be covering in the beginning of the unit.

I have already assigned the LearnZillion videos for Unit 2.  You will need to watch the videos by the last week in October.  The videos are also fairly short so I expect that everyone finds the time to watch the videos in order to help them better understand the concepts in the unit.

Reminder: Don't be afraid to try the MathCounts problem of the week each week to earn extra credit! Even if you complete part of the problem you can still receive credit!

Week of 9/29

This coming week we will be wrapping up Unit 1.  I plan on having the Unit 1 Post Test early next week (week of 10/6).  I will also be handing out the Unit 1 Project later this week.

We will be learning about the Distributive Property and how to use it to generate equivalent expressions this week.  This is a major concept that ties into GCF.  In preparation for these lessons you can check out the links below.

Important Dates:
Unit 1 Post Test week of October 6th
Unit 1 Project due on Friday October 10th

Learn Zillion
I have created classes on LearnZillion so that you will have access to videos and quizzes that correlate with what we are learning in class.  I will be handing out access codes for everyone so that you can create your own account and participate in assignments.  I have posted assignments for Unit 1 in preparation for the post test.  You will watch the assigned videos and then take a brief quiz.  Your results and completion are recorded and sent to me so please make sure you are completing the assignments.  Your performance on the assignments will only count towards your grade as far as whether or not you completed them.  So your actual score on any quizzes does not count toward your grade.
You will find that the assignments are not nearly as challenging as the work we complete in class and for homework.  The purpose of these assignments is to insure we have basic understandings of concepts.

GCF and LCM

If you haven't already please look up the Sieve of Eratosthenes!  It is very helpful when deciding whether or not a number is prime.

As we begin to discuss GCF and LCM word problems it is important to make sure that we are comfortable with determining the GCF and LCM of 2 or more numbers using the appropriate strategies.  Unless otherwise stated you can always use the strategy that works best for you HOWEVER it is important to know how to use other strategies as well.  If you are having trouble using prime factorization: practice! and watch video tutorials!

To CHECK your answers (not get your answers) there are actually GCF and LCM online tools that will produce the GCF and LCM of any 2 numbers in seconds.  Pretty awesome, I know!  The links are below along with some helpful video tutorials.
